What Remains

More than a year after I, the first-person male protagonist, left Feng Xinyu, the girl I loved deeply, without saying goodbye, I met Xu Haimeng while struggling with difficulties in both life and work. But soon, an accident that had been inevitable all along revealed the truth to me, and I embarked on a long journey to find love. Three years passed in the blink of an eye, but I still heard nothing from Feng Xinyu. Exhausted in body and mind, I returned to my hometown empty-handed. With my mother and neighbors trying to set me up, I prepared to give up my fantasies and begin a new romance and a new life...

I returned to the city. With help from my friend Wang Meng and the partners at Passionate Café, I restarted the career I had long neglected and became Jiali’s tutor. Meeting Juanzi brought me countless happy moments. Yet just as my career was taking off and I was about to spend the rest of my life with the one I loved, a sudden upheaval that had long been hidden away plunged me back to the lowest point of my life...

Having lost the person I loved for good, I left the bustling city and secluded myself in Xiaojing, an unfamiliar mountain village. Memories surfaced little by little in the quiet, still life, while unbearable pain that I could never sever from tormented my weary soul day and night. With Jiali’s encouragement, I set out once more along the road that connected my memories. At last, the truth began to emerge, bit by bit. “I hung up on Jiali and looked at my sleeping daughter, then out the window. There was no moonlight, no stars. The night slept quietly in the embrace of the city.”
