A Bestiary of Strange Women

[No romance, no national fortune, Lovecraftian containment mash-up, small ensemble cast, slow burn]

Xie Yi is reborn, returning to the night the strange tales first descended.

Her classmates scream, only to be eaten one by one by the uncanny creatures.

Faced with a world of despair, she suddenly unlocks the Strange Tales Compendium. As long as she collects strange tales, she can live in this world like a human.

After a life-or-death instance, she chooses the Containment Foundation, which she never joined in her previous life, and transfers to a military academy.

She becomes a member of the Foundation and heads to the front lines to contain anomalies.

In her spare time, she learns more at the military academy and, together with the Strange Tales Compendium, searches for contamination she encountered in her previous life, as well as things she has never seen before.

Every time she opens the compendium, it brings a different surprise to her containment work:

A trip to a church leads her into a terrifying hell.

After escaping, she enters a convenience store and encounters a spider with a human head.

A faceless girl beneath a streetlight on her way home from work.

A dismembered girl pulled from the water while fishing with friends.

Yet this series of contaminations is completely different from what she experienced in her previous life: a forest where anyone who enters disappears, an old neighborhood that keeps following her, a fish tank that suddenly appears at a friend's workstation, and human tissue in dumplings. Everything points to the reason she died so suddenly in her previous life.

Xie Yi looks at the eye in the sky and asks Ji Xing, “What is that?”

Ji Xing looks up in confusion. “There's nothing there?”

As Xie Yi stares at the enormous eye that has suddenly appeared in the sky, she finally realizes:

The true uncanny has returned!
