The Old Man River, a southern river in Alberta, Canada, is one of the main sources of the South Saskatchewan River. It originates from the Canadian Rockies, flows east through Lethbridge and Taber Provincial Park, and joins the Bow River 70 kilometers (44 miles) west of Medicine Hat to form the South Saskatchewan River. Counting from the top of the Crowsnest River, its main source, the total length is 402 kilometers (250 miles). It was an important coal shipping route in the 19th century. Together with the three main tributaries, it forms an irrigation area of more than 400,000 hectares (more than 1 million).
