"Beautiful Friend" is the masterpiece of Maupassant's novels. Duroy, a junior officer of the French colonial army in Algeria, was bold, ruthless and cruel. He broke into Paris on his own with his good looks. He was introduced by a friend to work as a reporter for "La Vie Française". From then on, he mingled in the circle of Parisian noble ladies, like a fish in water, and staged scenes of debauched farce. The novel reveals the emptiness, debauchery, and depravity of the upper class society, shows the shamelessness of bourgeois politicians, exposes the dark inside story of the political world and the press, and strongly criticizes the dark social reality.
Reader comments
This book is of great practical significance and exposes the emptiness and depravity of upper class society. The character of Du Luohua left a deep impression on me. His famous saying, "Life is like a mirror, it laughs when you laugh, and cries when you cry." It expresses the complexity of human nature. This reminds me of Becky Sharp in "Vanity Fair", who also pursued fame and fortune in the prosperous world, but ultimately came to nothing. Maupassant's works always make people think deeply and are recommended to friends who like realist literature.
Although Du Luohua is a despicable person. But he knew how to assess the situation and use the springboard to live the life he wanted.
It's so well written, and the depiction of human nature is so vivid. The world is a game, it depends on who you are on the same team with.
The description of psychological activities is particularly true and profound.
Super good literary masterpiece
It's a classic and I don't need to comment on it.
A century has passed, and stories are still happening everywhere...
Human emotions always arise between the heart and the body, because everyone always wants to be happy in the end, but what is the reality? Either things will backfire, or both parties will suffer losses.
A true portrayal of life, the strong is the final winner after all.
