Synopsis

"The Red and the Black" shows the full picture of the French Restoration period. It not only reveals the fate of the restored feudal aristocracy, but also criticizes the despicability of the powerful big bourgeoisie and its intricate struggles with the nobility and monks. It successfully creates the image of the protagonist Julien. The novel closely focuses on the protagonist Julien's personal struggle and final failure experience as the main line.
