This book collects more than 100 extant letters from the famous scholar Gu Hongming in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China. Most of them are written in English, including private letters and public letters published in newspapers and periodicals, translated into Chinese. The starting period of the letter almost covers the entire process from the time Gu Hongming returned to China from studying in England to the six years before his death. Most of them are unpublished materials, which are of great historical and literary value.

His letters are like short stories, vividly showing the social scene of that era and his personal thoughts and emotions. I especially like his criticism of some annoying characters in the letter, it's really to the point! Moreover, the translation in the book is also very authentic, allowing me, a person who is not very good at English, to understand it. All in all, this is a good book worth reading.
