Xiao Dashan, a young hunter in Wuyun Mountain, is as strong as an ox, handsome and burly but not good at words. On the way to the mountain for hunting, he rescues Jing Taohua, a young peasant girl who went to the mountain to dig bamboo shoots. He originally wanted to live a happy life of hunting, opening up wasteland and farming, but war broke out and he was forced to leave home and join the army.
