A reborn female-villain story: the vicious villainess turns over a new leaf and becomes the heroine. Because Wang Yinchan was once a beggar before being reborn, she knows how hard life is for beggars and won’t look down on them anymore. Just as she did in her previous life, she protects her younger sister, Wang Baochuan, and keeps her from getting together with Xue Pinggui.
After being reborn, Wang Yinchan becomes known for her medical skills. She can not only perform acupuncture but also write prescriptions, and she once cured the Empress Dowager. Later, she treats an epidemic among the common people. She’s also an expert at playing the guzheng and at chess. Once, after disguising herself as a man and beating an official’s daughter at chess, she was hounded by the girl. Wang Yinchan keeps her martial arts skills hidden, but she can wield twin swords and spears, is skilled with stone projectiles and hidden weapons, and excels at riding and archery. She likes disguising herself as a man, and even goes to tame a fiery red-maned steed sent by the male lead, Ling Xiao, who has come as an envoy from Xiliang. Ling Xiao is impressed by her. He plays the flute, while Wang Yinchan plays the guzheng. At first, Ling Xiao doesn’t realize she’s a woman, doesn’t recognize her as his kindred spirit, and has no idea she’s the second daughter of the Chancellor. In fact, they’ve known each other since childhood and exchanged matching dragon-and-phoenix jade pendants as tokens of their love.
Wang Yinchan rescues Princess Xi He from a group of thugs. The princess falls for Han Chuan, Wang Yinchan’s male alias, mistakenly believing Wang Yinchan is a man. Besides Ling Xiao and Xi He, three other men under Wang Yinchan’s other identities fall for her: Qiu Guan, the loyal guard of the Prince’s residence; He Feng, the refined strategist from Xiliang; and Zhang Kui, the dashing, roguish martial arts champion of the Great Tang. (You can check out the illustrated character guide in section 3 of the table of contents first, haha.)
