Zhou Zhengzheng, a young lady from a fallen noble family in the Southern Kingdom, is sent into exile in the north after her family suffers a disaster. She is drugged along the way, then returns to the Southern Kingdom, where she becomes a "chess piece" kept by her former fiancé. Yet after being taken in, this "chess piece" never once sees the person playing the game. When they finally meet, it is at the border between the Northern and Southern Kingdoms.
"Still want to see your sister? Kill him, then come back to the Southern Kingdom and find me." Zhou Zhengzheng takes the slip of paper placed in her hand and looks at the person before her.
Once, he had been in his prime, bright and sunny.
When she was bored, she used to imagine what their married life might be like.
Now that they've met again, he opens with threats and an order to kill. Does he think that highly of her, or has he lost his mind?
She glances at the slip of paper in her hand. It bears a name.
Could the girl she was, too weak to even wring a chicken's neck, really kill someone this formidable in a foreign land?
But so be it. Zhou Zhengzheng sets out for the Northern Kingdom. She wants to save her sister, but she can't complete the task.
Later, during her three years in the Northern Kingdom, she is so busy trying to survive that she never even gets the chance to think about where to look for the person she's been tasked with finding.
Just as she decides to give up on the task and on life itself, her target collapses at her doorstep.
Only, at first she doesn't know that this is her target. By the time she finds out, she has already spent a long time searching for the person who shared her days and nights and stood by her through the darkest times...
