The protagonist of the novel, Tom, is innocent and lively, playful and active, full of fantasy and adventure. He cannot bear the restriction of personality and boring life, and always wants to do something heroic. Through Tom's adventure experiences, the novel deeply satirizes and criticizes the hypocritical and vulgar social customs, hypocritical religious rituals and rigid and outdated school education in the United States. The author uses contrasting techniques and through the various adventure experiences of the child protagonist to form a sharp contrast between the innocent and lively children's minds and the outdated and dull living environment, criticizing the strict rules and precepts of children's education at that time and all kinds of vulgar social customs.
