"The Family" is a long and complicated story, recording the centuries-old game between several large families, including the Langya Wang family, the Yingchuan Yu family, the Longkang Huan family, and the Chenjun Xie family. What I'm reading now is the first one, which covers the journey from south to east across the Yangtze River to Wang Dun's first mutiny. The Langya Wang family thus took control of the political affairs of the Eastern Jin Dynasty and created a model of co-governance between the clan and the imperial power.

"The king and the horse share the world", this sentence is really domineering! Moreover, the book also mentioned many historical celebrities, such as Wang Dun, Wang Dao, Wang Xizhi, etc., Which gave me a deeper understanding of the culture and art of that era. All in all, this is a great book worth reading!

This book takes the story of the Langya Wang family's growth from an ordinary noble family to a top family as the main line, and discusses the success of big things slowly. In this book, we can see that Sima Rui inherited the forbearance and calmness of his ancestor Sima Yi, the statesmanlike style of Wang Dao, the representative of the Wang family, and the military strength of Wang Dun. From the time when the Langya Wang family and Sima Rui jointly traveled south to manage Jiangdong, until Sima Rui ascended the throne and proclaimed the emperor, the relationship between the Langya Wang family and Sima Rui was like a couple. However, after Sima Rui became the emperor, in order to check and balance the Langya Wang family, they suppressed the gentry, cultivated cronies, and strengthened the imperial power. In the end, it aroused the dissatisfaction of the gentry represented by the Langya Wang family, which led to Wang Dun's rebellion. Sima Rui failed in this game and eventually died of illness. At this point, the top bureaucrats in the Jin dynasty were basically from top families such as the Wang family of Langya, which further confirmed the saying that "the king and the horse share the world".

For me, the Jin Dynasty is second only to ethnic minorities such as the Yuan and Qing Dynasties because of the Sima family, so I don't know much about the history of the Jin Dynasty. However, for various reasons, the aristocratic families gradually aroused my interest. Because of games and novels, noble families are always covered with a veil, invisible and intangible, but they exist. This book takes the aristocratic family as the guide, telling not only the changes from the Eastern Jin Dynasty to the Western Jin Dynasty, but also what the emperor and the aristocratic families could do in the troubled times, what they influenced, and what was not unchanged. Some people always say that there is nothing new under the sun, and I think they are right. Because no matter how the times develop, people are still the same group of people. It is rare to focus on Sima Rui and Director Wang. Most books and periodicals in the same period write about Zhao and Qian Yan.
