This novel tells the story of a female protagonist who transmigrates into Dream of the Red Chamber and becomes Lin Daiyu's personal maid, Zijuan. She watches as Lin Daiyu lives under someone else's roof at her maternal grandmother's home and falls prey to her aunt's schemes. The protagonist was an excellent lawyer in the modern world and can't stand by and watch injustice, so she steps in to help Lin Daiyu hold her head high at her grandmother's home.
This is also a story about growing up. The modern-day narrative follows the heroine from age 14 to 36. After going through many experiences, she transforms. The hardships and setbacks of life don't defeat her. Instead, they make her stronger with every fight.
The modern-day story has two plotlines:
1. Jin Ziyu and Chen Ran: The two join forces in middle school and remain in love into middle age. As they grow, they face all kinds of difficulties at work and in life, including setbacks in their careers, hurtful relatives, illness, and the temptation of a third party. Still, they love and support each other, weathering one challenge after another. They stay true to their original feelings and ultimately build a happy life together.
2. Ziyu and her best friend Li Sisi meet at university and share a precious friendship. Li Sisi and her husband Zhang Yang fall in love at university. Jin Ziyu, Li Sisi, and Zhang Yang are classmates. After marriage, Zhang Yang works outside the home while Li Sisi takes care of it, and they enjoy a happy marriage. But as Zhang Yang's career takes off, he grows conceited and finds a mistress, deeply hurting Sisi. Their marriage eventually falls apart. Sisi learns from her pain, keeps growing, and finally regains her confidence in life and starts anew.
