Heroine: Ji Manxi, a skilled physician and daughter of the Marquis of the West. She is Ji Fa’s younger sister, but is actually Yin Shou’s daughter. At first, she is innocent and romantic, talented and resourceful, and accomplished in both civil and martial arts. After her worldview collapses midway through the story, she begins to mature. In the end, she escapes to the northern lands with her beloved, and they spend their lives together.
Hero: Chong Yingbiao, the illegitimate son of the Marquis of the North. He has been unloved since childhood and had a miserable upbringing. Once people get to know him, he is straightforward with friends but aloof toward strangers. He treats women differently. He falls for the heroine at first sight and silently protects her at first. He loves her but feels inferior and is afraid to tell her. He saves her midway through the story, and they get together later on. The two learn from and grow alongside each other, and eventually escape to the northern lands with the heroine, with help from Ji Fa and Jiang Wenhuan.
