This novel is a continuation of the Yue opera Chen Sanliang. Set during the Zhengde era of the Ming dynasty, it tells the legendary love story of the extraordinary Chen Sanliang (Li Suping) and her sworn younger brother, Chen Kui. Amid natural disasters and human calamities, when the people are left in dire straits, they support each other and make it their mission to save the world.
During the Ming dynasty, the weather turned bitterly cold, floods and earthquakes struck frequently, and war followed hard on the heels of disaster. Chen Kui, a government official, was always rushing off to relieve disasters and put down rebellions.
But Chen Kui harbored a shocking secret. To save her father, she had once been forced to disguise herself as a man, and after doing so, she could never go back.
After her father died, the young Chen Kui became a beggar. She was taken in by Chen Sanliang (Li Suping), who was also down on her luck. To keep Chen Kui from falling into a life of prostitution, she continued to pass as a man, and the two called each other sisters.
To survive in a world torn by chaos, Chen Kui sat for the imperial examinations and became a jinshi. After many twists and turns, she was reunited with her older sister. To protect Chen Kui's identity, the two married. Even after their wedding, they always treated each other with propriety, like family and confidantes. Their love for each other was deep, yet restrained.
Later, when Prince Ning rebelled, Chen Kui died for her country, and Chen Sanliang drowned herself.
Their brief but radiant lives seemed to have reached their end. Yet Chen Kui said, “Sister, remember that in our next life, my surname will still be Chen. Yours must still be Li. I’ll go plant the sunflowers you love and wait for us to meet again...”
A rare good book
Together together together
I like it, that's enough
It's really beautiful
