The Lonely Spiral

Life seems to be one cycle after another. We arrive with nothing and leave unable to take anything with us. As children, we worry our parents; when we become parents, we worry about our children. When we're young, we wish we could grow up quickly and become independent. Once grown, we always look back fondly on those carefree days. The days pass one by one, yet most people find that aside from growing older, nothing else seems to have changed. Life feels like an endless repetition: today repeats yesterday, tomorrow repeats today, like a wheel that finishes one turn only to begin rolling through the next. All this makes it seem as though our lives are going around in circles, never reaching the other shore we dream of. But is that really the case? Great figures make history, while ordinary people move it forward. You and I are ordinary people, but it is we who drive the wheel of history.
