No Dating in High School, Starting with Me

“Don’t get too close to boys.”

My mother’s words were chains, turning Ren Qing into a sensitive little snail.

Until Mu Yu came along.

A young person’s love makes no sense:

The brown sugar and eggs he brought when she had cramps, the way he waited for her after school, the light in his eyes when he smiled and said, “See you tomorrow”...

For the first time, Ren Qing tentatively reached out her feelers.

“If you take one step back...”

“I’ll disappear for good.”

Ren Qing looked at the gray, offline profile across from her, gave a self-mocking smile, and deleted every one of Mu Yu’s contact details with a tap of her finger.

She grabbed her luggage and scrambled out the door.

Years later, on a cliff on Makalio Island.

The deep blue Mediterranean surged below them. The man beside her held out his hand:

“Jump. I’ll catch you.”

Ren Qing suddenly remembered the rain when she was seventeen, and the way she had fled in a panic.

All along, someone had been choosing her, unwaveringly.

But this time...

She had finally learned not to run away.
