This world has “Rifts.” They warp reality into uncanny domains where rules kill. Physical attacks are useless, and breaking a rule means certain death. Only a handful of “Rift Tamers” can discern the rules and survive.
Xu Ruoxing comes across a blank copy of The Book of Borrowed Lives. It can't give him power, but it can help him decipher the rules behind the monsters. Together with his childhood friend Zhuang Mengyu and several others whose abilities have awakened, he forms a team: they use facial masks to identify monsters, poetry to seal evil, traditional Chinese medicine to calm the spirit, and calligraphy to suppress fiends. The cultural treasures passed down by their ancestors become their weapons against the unknown.
To fight the uncanny with the uncanny is a game of wits; holding fast to the Ten Virtues is their creed.
But using their powers comes at a price: the more they protect, the more completely they are forgotten.
Those who live on through the book will, in the end, fade into silence. Yet silence is not the end; protection is their destiny.
