Northbound, Then Southbound

Old Deng in this book is an everyman figure for all the veteran “old hands” in the construction industry. From the north to the south, the scenery he sees, the conflicts he encounters, and the lessons he learns all speak to how short life is. There are struggles, romance, flirtation, private sorrows, and unconventional perspectives. Whether in politics, the workplace, or everyday life, you may find a version of yourself in this story.

Old Deng grips the steering wheel tightly. A crosswind nearly sends his family of three to their deaths.

Huang Yingying throws herself into Old Deng’s arms and pours out her sorrows.

Organization Department Director Guo Dekuan gazes up at the early summer night sky, deep blue. He loves blue because his late wife did. What is a song of grief?

Who could have imagined that Sun Changxi’s fate would change because he knew how to stir-fry a plate of bean sprouts with vinegar? He was there in person when the plan was set in motion.

Why not use the “knife” placed in his hands? Xiao Heping cannot accept it.

If you’re an old hand like Old Deng, come along and share what you’ve learned. If you’re young, perhaps reading this will help you avoid a few detours. History keeps repeating itself, and the stories you’ve lived through may be ones you’ll have to live through again in the future.
