China’s Game of Thrones, a sweeping account of a great ruler’s struggle to claim supremacy over all under Heaven.
Hundreds of characters, dozens of wars; schemes and romance, power and games. A glorious age of turmoil and strife, and an epic history of rival states vying for supremacy.
The Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods are among the most vividly rendered chapters in Chinese history. The story opens with King Ping of Zhou’s eastward relocation, then traces the rise of Qi and Chu and their struggle for supremacy, ending for the time being with Qi’s apparent victory. But the contest among the feudal lords was far from over. After Guan Zhong and Duke Huan of Qi died, Qi gradually declined. Meanwhile, Chong’er, a prince of Jin who had been wandering in exile, returned home and secured hegemony through such events as the retreat of ninety li and the Battle of Chengpu.
The five-volume historical novel series The Flowing Flames of Spring and Autumn spans 300 years, from Zheng’s brief ascendancy in the Spring and Autumn period to the end of Yue’s hegemony. The novels feature bloody wars and massacres, as well as the deep tenderness hidden behind the steely resolve of its heroes, and strive to restore history as it really was.
Powerful Ministers in Turbulent Times is the fourth book in The Flowing Flames of Spring and Autumn series. Jin and Chu had been locked in a prolonged struggle for supremacy, and both were exhausted. Thanks to the efforts of the people of Song, the two sides signed a peace agreement known as the Disarmament Movement, clearly dividing their respective spheres of influence. Seeing an opportunity in the decline of Jin and Chu, Qi Jinggong rose to become the new hegemon with the support of his powerful ministers Yan Zi and Tian Rangju. But Qi Jinggong lacked the qualities of a true hegemon. As his hold on power grew increasingly shaky, who would seize this once-in-a-millennium opportunity?
The characters in this book are distinct. Hua Yuan's ideals are beautiful, but in that war-torn era, his ideas were unrealistic. The author's writing style is vivid and the plot has ups and downs, which made me feel like I was in that era and felt the charm of history. Looking forward to the development of the story later!
