The New History of the Five Dynasties

The New History of the Five Dynasties was written by Ouyang Xiu of the Song dynasty. Originally titled Records of the Five Dynasties, it came to be called the New History of the Five Dynasties to distinguish it from the official history compiled by Xue Juzheng and others. It records fifty-three years of history, from the first year of the Kaiping era under the Later Liang (907) to the seventh year of the Xiande era under the Later Zhou (960). The New History of the Five Dynasties provides more detailed accounts, but its extensive additions and deletions to the old treatises make it less reliable as a model. Its historical value is therefore somewhat lower than that of the Old History of the Five Dynasties.
