In the early Southern Song, society seems to have entered a peaceful era, but in truth it is turbulent and unsettled. How do ordinary people survive in such troubled times? After a childhood spent drifting from place to place, she gradually learns how to deal with people and navigate the world. The scars of her early years keep her from ever finding happiness, but with the help of her good friends Xing'er, Xueya, and others, Lin Xuan overcomes her fears. She also experiences the betrayal of a friend, and because of her sexuality, must endure society's disapproving stares. Loved ones pass away, and a kind friend from her childhood grows dark-hearted by the time they meet again. Faced with a chaotic world and the darkness of human nature, she falls into despair, but after seeing life for what it is, she ultimately continues to love it. Through Lin Xuan's experiences, this book portrays the lives of ordinary people amid the turmoil of the Southern Song. The plot is full of twists and turns, and well worth reading.
