The Yan and Bai families have been close for generations. Yan Shuyao and Bai Chen'an grew up and went to school together. Even when Yan Shuyao's mother was pregnant with her, she sought advice from Bai Chen'an's mother.
Their relationship hit a small snag during their senior year of high school. Yan Shuyao discovered that Bai Chen'an, whom she'd always treated like an older brother, had been secretly in love with her all along. The revelation terrified her so much that she even tried to run away.
“You like me?” Yan Shuyao asked, staring at Bai Chen'an's diary in disbelief.
“As you can see.”
