The heroine, Xiaoxiao, comes from a poor family. Her father is a drunk, and her mother is sharp-tongued and mean. Having grown up in an unhappy home, Xiaoxiao knows she can't change the misfortune of her family background, so she decides to take control of her own future. By chance, she meets Qingcheng's richest man, Shi Yan. He proposes a marriage contract, and Xiaoxiao agrees to escape her life of poverty.
The terms of the contract are as follows: Xiaoxiao must marry Shi Yan for three years. During that time, she must fulfill her duties as his wife, including attending various social events and taking care of his daily needs. In return, Shi Yan will provide Xiaoxiao with a comfortable lifestyle and her needs. After three years, their marriage will automatically end, and neither will interfere in the other's life.
As time passes, however, Xiaoxiao realizes that she has developed deep feelings for Shi Yan. At the same time, Shi Yan gradually realizes that he has feelings for Xiaoxiao, too. But their marriage contract becomes an obstacle to their relationship. In the end, they overcome the conflict between their feelings and the contract, as well as pressure from their families and society, and find happiness together.
