Island Revelry: Fan Culture in Cyberspace

The era of “traffic rules all” has given rise to fan communities that are now large-scale, organized, institutionalized, and highly functional. Some have even become aggressive and extreme. How are fan communities structured? How do fans communicate with one another? What psychological motives drive their behavior, and what interests bind them together? The author began by “trying to become a fan” and eventually became a seasoned fan who “centered her life around following celebrities.” Drawing on more than 500 days of immersive experience and observation, she lifts the veil on fan culture and opens a window for dialogue with young people, helping them face trends and fashions with clear eyes and approach society and themselves more rationally. The book also offers valuable insights and food for thought for those seeking to understand youth culture and improve online guidance and governance.
