A Fling at the Garment Factory

Fortunately, I read this novel about a garment factory, which brought back memories of my childhood. I was born in 2004. In 2007, my parents went to Guangzhou to work, and they took me with them when I was over 3 years old. The starting point of my memories starts from the dormitory of the garment factory. At that time, my parents lived in a dormitory with about 10 employees, all with bunk beds. Because I was too young at that time, my parents would lock me in the dormitory during the day to prevent me from running around. My father would leave me a copybook and let me practice calligraphy in the empty employee dormitory. I would come back from get off work around 6pm to check. If the tracing was uneven or missing, I would inevitably be beaten. My father or mother would take me out to eat wontons at noon, and then continue to trace the copybooks for me in the locked room in the afternoon. At that time, I was too young to understand what my parents and roommates were saying, so I only remember some scenes, and they often teased me. After a while, my parents took me to their factory to stay. My parents worked in different factories, very close to each other, separated by a road. I remember that my dad's factory at that time was called "Hongqi Canal", which was very similar to the name of a cigarette. After that, I would lie in piles of clothes next to my mom to sleep, and I would also pick up cigarettes in the workshop. I would run around playing with a yellow excavator. The factory boss's wife liked me very much. I would often go to the sofa in her office to watch TV. She would give me the toys her son didn't want to play with, and would also give me snacks. My mother would often work overtime, and I could make more money by sharing other people's work. I would watch from the boss's wife's office. When the garden baby fell asleep, my mother woke me up after finishing work at around 10 o'clock. She took me downstairs to buy chocolates or big chewing gum, and then went to the factory opposite to meet my father to eat barbecue at the night market. At that time, I liked to go to big shopping malls with my parents on weekends. There were many people in front of the shopping malls, and they would build a few sheds, a makeshift zoo with small animal cages, and a merry-go-round. At that time, I especially wanted a glowing golden hoop. They sold it for 5 yuan in the mall, but my mother wouldn't buy it for me. I went to another factory where my dad was sewing trouser legs, the kind that twirl around, and I was carrying it next to him. Consonants and vowels, ancient poems, or shooting basketball next to him. When I was bored, my father and I would tell me some truths. What I remember most now is that he said, "It is better to rely on the sky and the earth than to rely on yourself." I would take my father's tea cup to the toilet to help him get hot water. One time, I broke a cup after overfilling it and burned my hand. There is still a faint scar on the middle finger of my right hand. I cried for a whole day. I couldn't pick up the spoon when I went to eat wontons at noon. I kept crying. My father got angry and beat me again. Later, I became familiar with the location of my parents' factory. I would run from my father's factory to my mother's factory from time to time. I crossed a road and ran from the second floor where my father worked to the sixth floor where my mother worked. I still remember that to get to the sixth floor, I had to walk across a rusty iron bridge between the two buildings. I was scared every time I went there, fearing that the bridge would break and I would fall from the sixth floor. My father suddenly noticed that I was gone while he was working, so he thought I had been kidnapped and left his work to look for me everywhere. After a while, my mother called him to tell him that I was coming to her place. This happened many times. My parents were afraid that I would get lost, so they locked me in the house again. But this time it was not a dormitory but the one they rented. It was a small room with a bed, a bathroom, and a balcony. There was no TV in the room. It was boring to stay there every day. I could only play with the toys given by the landlady, including cars, toy guns, and Transformers. When I took a shower at night, I always had a lot of lint from the garment factory. I was still dishonest, stepping on tables and stools, trying to lift the ceiling and jump out. Later, my parents found me a primary school to study in. The tuition was more than 2,300 per semester, which was very expensive. There was a school bus to pick me up. I went directly to the first grade. I still remember that on the first day of school, my mother took me to the school gate to buy some snacks, and then left me at school. During class, I would go to the iron bridge between the buildings and watch the school buses on the playground on the pretext of going to the bathroom, wanting to go back to see my parents quickly. When I was more than three years old, my life as a student in Guangzhou was difficult to describe. Now it seems that I am very happy, but I definitely didn't think so at the time. At around 6 o'clock in the morning, I would wait for the school bus at the breakfast shop downstairs. My mother would buy me steamed buns and sesame balls, and my father would use my water cup to ask the boss to fill a cup of soy milk to drink at school. I remember that Zhou went back to a classmate's house to play. One of his classmates owned a supermarket and gave us many pens and notebooks. Now 20 years old and in college, I look back on those days as if it was yesterday. The experience of accompanying my parents in the garment factory had a great impact on my later personality. It taught me to be independent, strong, and unwilling to admit defeat. It also taught me how to get along with loneliness. Contact with all kinds of people in the factory made me cheerful, confident, and eloquent. Living in a strange environment at a young age has given me the ability to adapt to new environments and changes. In short, I learned a lot during those days and gained a lot of knowledge. Now that my family's conditions have improved, I can't forget the days when I was a child living and struggling with my parents. Reading the author's novel about a garment factory gave me a new perspective on garment factories, one that I had never noticed when I was a child.
