Heilongjiang is a major province of immigration. Before the founding of the People's Republic of China, millions of migrants poured into the region during the “Chuang Guandong” migration, seeking a livelihood. After liberation, migrants continued to arrive in large numbers, on a scale that remains among the largest in China. In the 30 years following the launch of reform and opening-up, Heilongjiang's population trend underwent a dramatic reversal. After a century and a half as a province that received migrants, it became a province with net population outflow. The scale of that outflow is a telling reflection of Heilongjiang's economic malaise over the past 30 years. This book is divided into three parts, covering Heilongjiang's ancient, foreign, and modern and contemporary migration history. It is of great significance for formulating population policies suited to the province's actual conditions.
