Synopsis

Name of Sutra: Sutra of the Thirty-six Parts of Taishang. The author is unknown, probably around the end of the Northern and Southern Periods. This sutra has been recorded in Volume 37 of "The Supreme Secret Essentials". The whole book includes thirty-six short classics, divided into three categories. The Yuqing realm has twelve volumes including the Shangqing Sutra and the Miao Zhenjing; the Shangqing realm has twelve volumes including the Dongxuan Sutra and the Yuanyang Sutra; the Taiqing realm has twelve volumes including the Taiqing Sutra and the Thorough Vision Sutra. The format of each sutra is similar. They all describe the sutra first, followed by four-character verses and twelve runes. Its content briefly describes the theory of cultivation and its methods, and explains terms such as vacuum, nothingness, nature, and nature of mind. It is believed that all living beings have Tao nature, but because they fail to have straight minds and righteous thoughts, they are confused about their nature, so they have all kinds of troubles and disasters. If you can cultivate your mind according to the Tao, recognize the nature of Dharma, practice the righteous Dharma, be free from color, and be quiet and inactive, you can reach the state of tranquility, achieve the Dharma body, and never have worries. Its practice method emphasizes doing good deeds and accumulating virtue, burning incense and building a fast, reciting sutras and interpretations, cultivating blessings, denouncing the methods of breathing in and out of breath, sitting and forgetting to refine elixirs, etc. This sutra had great influence on Taoism in the Sui and Tang Dynasties. The "Supreme Inner Secret True Treasure Sutra" praises this sutra as "the most noble and noble", "all-inclusive and wonderful down to the smallest detail".
