In 1980, Carver submitted his collection of short stories to the publisher. Editor Gordon Lish shortened the length of three of the stories by 70%, changed the titles of 10, and revised the endings of 14... The overall deletion exceeded 50%. It was later published under the title "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love", which received great acclaim and established Carver's literary status. Carver has been opposed to this deletion, and once wanted to cancel the publication, and was determined to publish the short story collection called "Beginners" in its original form. Twenty-one years after Carver's death, this wish came true.
