In the late Tang Dynasty, Princess Pincuo, the only daughter of the King of Tibet, travels thousands of miles from Lhasa to Shazhou, now Dunhuang, which has been under Tibetan rule for many years. There she discovers that Liaowu, a monk at Leiyin Temple, is an old acquaintance. Dunhuang's windswept sands and murals, the bustling crowds along the Silk Road: all seem to go on as before. But beneath Tibetan rule, Shazhou is seething with unrest. The people have suffered oppression for too long and yearn to return to the Tang. Amid bloodshed and turmoil, as the fate of family and country hangs in the balance, Princess Pincuo and the monk Liaowu journey from innocence to the brink of death, and develop feelings they cannot speak of.
