Synopsis

"Book of the Later Han" is a biographical history book recording the history of the Eastern Han Dynasty. It was written by Fan Ye (398-445) during the Liu and Song Dynasties in the Southern Dynasties. This book is divided into ten chronicles, eighty biographies and eight chronicles (the eight chronicles were added from Sima Biao's "Continuation of the Book of Han"), recording the 195-year history from Emperor Guangwu's proclaimed emperor (in the 25th year) to the abdication of Emperor Xian of the Han Dynasty (in the 220th year). The Later Han Dynasty, together with "Historical Records", "Han Shu" and "Three Kingdoms", are collectively called the "First Four Histories". Before the Three Kingdoms era, people regarded "Dongguan Hanji" together with "Historical Records" and "Hanshu", collectively known as the "Three Histories". After the Tang Dynasty, this book gradually replaced "Dongguan Hanji".

This chronicle and biographies preserve a large number of original historical materials, which are of high value for studying the history of the Eastern Han Dynasty. Unfortunately, there are only eight records left in Sima Biao's "Continuation of Hanshu". The "Shihuo Zhi" and "Hequ Zhi" that should be used to study that period of history may never see the light of day again.
