New Five Dynasties History

"New History of the Five Dynasties" was compiled by Ouyang of the Song Dynasty. It was originally called "Historical Records of the Five Dynasties". Later generations were called the New History of the Five Dynasties to distinguish it from the History of the Five Dynasties compiled by officials such as Xue Juzheng. The book has a total of seventy-four volumes, including twelve volumes of the chronicle, forty-five volumes of biographies, three volumes of examinations, eleven volumes of family and chronology, and three volumes of the appendix of the four barbarians. It records a total of fifty-three years of history from the first year of Kaiping in Later Liang (907) to the seventh year of Xiande in Later Zhou (960). When the "New History of the Five Dynasties" was written, historical materials that could not be seen in the "Old History of the Five Dynasties" were added, such as "Meetings of the Five Dynasties", "Supplement to the History of the Five Dynasties", etc., So the content is more detailed. However, the "New History of the Five Dynasties" greatly simplifies the old "Zhi" part, which is not enough as a lesson, so the value of historical materials is slightly lower than that of the "Old History of the Five Dynasties".
