[Six-Character Sutra Method] is a practice performed by esoteric Buddhism based on the Six-Character Divine Mantra Sutra and the Guanyin Sutra to pray for subduing or alleviating disasters. It is also called the Six-Character Dharma, the Six-Character Offering, the Six-Character Divine Mantra, and the Six-Character Great Auspicious Chapter. The six characters refer to the names of the Six Avalokitesvara, which are the main six Avalokitesvara of the Avalokitesvara: Holy Avalokitesvara, Thousand Hands, Eleven Faces, Horse Head, Ruyi Wheel, and Zhunhao (or Bu Kong Suo). It does not refer to the six-character Dharani (for example, the small mantra of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva 'Om Mani Padme Hum' mentioned in the Mahayana Precious King Sutra is called the Six-Character Dharani). The above is the theory of Japanese Taiwanese Buddhism or Eastern Buddhism. There are various opinions about the deity enshrined during the practice of the Six-Character Sutra. It may be said that when practicing the method of calming down disasters, the holy Guanyin is the deity; when practicing the method of subduing, the six-character black king is the deity.
