"The Essence of Song Poetry" is a self-compiled textbook that Chen Yan used to teach Song poetry at the Wuxi Traditional Chinese Studies School in his later years. Chen Yan's discussion of poetry is based on the two generations of Tang and Song Dynasties. In fact, he is fighting for the status of Song poetry. He regards Song poetry as the development and change of Tang poetry. This book is based on the May 1938 reprint of The Commercial Press. At the end of the book is attached an article by Zhu Ziqing "What is the Essence of Song Poetry - A Comment on the Essence of Song Poetry" by Shi Yi (Chen Yan).
Reader comments
This "Essence of Song Poetry" is accurately selected and detailedly annotated, allowing people to have a deeper understanding of Song poetry. Chen Yan's selection and Gao Keqin's proofreading and collection of reviews complement each other, and the writing style is rigorous yet vivid. Reading this book, I can't help but think of Qian Zhongshu's "Selected Notes on Song Poetry". Both of them have unique insights into Song poetry.
