When Tie Fengyun, the Heavenly Court’s chief transport marshal, is wrongly captured, it sets in motion a love story between Liu Huaizhi of the Heavenly Court and Tian Xiugu, a mortal woman.
Born into poverty, Liu Huaizhi follows his mother’s instructions and seeks a way to make a living. Along the way, he meets Miss Chun, and the two fall in love. Later, with guidance from the Xie family, he tames the divine five-clawed beast at the martial arts examination and wins first place. Wang Debiao, who comes second, bears a grudge because he failed to take the top spot. The Heavenly Court prizes Liu Huaizhi’s talent and appoints him marshal of the rhyme-bearing troops. One day, several elderly immortals from the Heavenly Court drink until they are tipsy and praise his handsome looks and strength. Just then, the mortal woman Tian Xiugu appears. Envious of such a well-matched couple, the immortals ingeniously arrange their marriage.
When the Heavenly Court learns of the match, it realizes that the bond violates the laws of heaven. Since the immortals brought the couple together, however, it decides to show leniency. Their reunion is just around the corner.
Wang Debiao, eager to avenge a personal grudge, seizes command and leads the troops, betraying their goodwill in an attempt to eliminate Liu Huaizhi. In the end, with his son Huaixi leading the way, they endure countless hardships and turn the tide.
After the reunion, Miss Chun bears a daughter without a formal wedding, while Xiugu has a son after a proper marriage. Miss Chun passes away not long afterward, having helped bring about their heaven-sent match. Later, Xiugu falls ill from longing for her hometown. Her husband gives up wealth and status for love, and the two go to live happily among mortals in this romantic drama.
