A twist of fate swaps their identities. On the surface, Xu Qingge is merely the general's household's adopted daughter, and to survive she shows respect to the matriarch, constantly dodges her legitimate elder sister's schemes, and pretends to be docile to please her legitimate elder brother. As time goes by, her elder brother can no longer hide his repressed love, driving Xu Qingge to flee. Her childhood friend, a sickly junior fellow disciple, also refuses to let her go. The new emperor eventually discovers the secret identities she keeps accidentally revealing. Xu Qingge must fend off her elder brother's relentless advances, steer her lovesick junior fellow disciple onto the right path, and still find the energy to untangle the new emperor's tests and suspicions.
