"Historical Records" was originally called "Tai Shi Gong Shu", and it was first called "Shi Ji" at the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty. It is a complete systematic work in ancient China that was independently completed by an individual. A total of 130 volumes and more than 520,000 words. This book selects eighteen chapters from "Historical Records" for beginners to study. In terms of layout, annotations are omitted and a double-column text-to-white format is adopted. This format is similar to "direct reading", and readers can appreciate Tai Shigong's elegant and wonderful articles "without asking for detailed explanations". In order to let readers have an overview of the ancient people's reading experience of "Historical Records" and enrich the level and experience of reading, Professor Chen Shuliang browsed many ancient books and selected comments from "Dushulu" written by Zeng Guofan, a famous minister in the late Qing Dynasty, and "Review of Historical Records" written by Li Jingxing, a famous scholar in the late Qing Dynasty, and attached them to the end of each article. Zeng Guofan took self-cultivation as his own responsibility throughout his life, and "reading without duplication" was his basic rule of self-cultivation. "Dushu Lu" is his experience in studying, textual research and collation of the classics and history books. It is not only the verification of his reading, but also his practical thinking. Li Jingxing's review is a rare good article, and it is difficult to see it today. His reviews ranged from the proposition of the chapter, the center of the work, the author's intention, comments on historical figures, the use of historical materials, as well as the similarities and differences between the books, the structure of each chapter, and the review and deliberation of each word, time and place.
