The Business Engineer

The protagonist, A Gui, is an expert in communications technology. He runs a shop selling network surveillance equipment in an electronics mall in Shenzhen. One day, after helping a mysterious old man known as Old K with numerous business investigations and technical support tasks, A Gui begins working as a "business operative." The two work closely together, one in the open and the other behind the scenes; one devises the strategy while the other charges into the fray. As their joint projects grow in number, Old K is there to clean up after A Gui and bail him out whenever anything goes wrong. Having grown up in a single-parent household, A Gui comes to depend on Old K as both a father figure and a mentor, and gets used to following his instructions and carrying out plans as directed. Through their subsequent work, A Gui gradually learns about Old K's tragic family history. Old K had founded a business investigation firm that took on assignments to investigate all kinds of commercial fraud and trade secrets. But after looking into the inside dealings of a biotech company listed in Hong Kong, Old K's wife and son were killed in a terrible accident. Several of his assistants then inexplicably quit, and the firm was forced to disband. With nowhere left to turn, Old K had thought that catching the person in charge of the biotech company would lead him to the culprit who had destroyed his family, allowing him to avenge his wife and child. But the company conceals even deeper secrets and a hidden mastermind, with even more complex interests at stake.
