Pseudogenes are DNA sequences that resemble normal genes but are not expressed, having lost their function.
At some point, for reasons unknown, pseudogenes began activating on a massive scale. Those affected came down with all kinds of strange illnesses. Some barely clung to life, while others were carried straight off to the morgue.
Yet a tiny fraction of people awakened special, or divine, genes instead, gaining all sorts of extraordinary abilities and becoming superhumans.
The authorities named them espers.
Lin Hao was an orphan and an esper whose special genes had been detected when he was a child. After being trained and educated by the Esper Administration Bureau, he graduated from its training institute and was assigned to the Esper Countermeasures Division in Kunri City, Dahua.
On his very first day there, Lin Hao stumbled into a werewolf attack case.
“My ability is Air Manipulation: Compression and Release.”
“My ability is Dreamweaving: Weaving and Resonance.”
“My ability is the Power of Words: Praise and Belittlement.”

“Fine, fine. From now on, we're all following your lead.”
The werewolf case was solved, but it also uncovered a secret plot by the mob.
“Damn, things are usually pretty quiet around here. Why is everything so big and complicated this year?”
“Doesn't matter. I'll handle it.”
Full of ambition, Lin Hao was ready to make his mark and climb the ranks fast.
