The Legend of Shaolin

This book focuses mainly on the history and culture of Shaolin martial arts. Its central principle is the unity of Chan Buddhism and martial arts. Shaolin Temple is the ancestral home of the Chan Buddhist school, whose core teachings are to realize one's true nature and attain Buddhahood through sudden enlightenment. In the eyes of Buddhists, meditation is the true path, while martial skills are merely secondary techniques. The monks practice martial arts simply to calm their minds, tame their nature, and set aside distractions to enter meditation. Their training also helps them stay fit, defend themselves, and protect the temple and the Dharma.
