A Compendium of Strange Deaths Among Chinese Emperors

From the Qin Empire’s unification of the land to the Qing Dynasty’s dismal end, 223 legitimate emperors ruled China over more than two thousand years of history. In the eyes of the world, emperors stood at the pinnacle of power: their authority reached to the heavens, and they held life and death in their hands; three thousand beauties filled their harems, offering every pleasure under the sun; delicacies of every kind were theirs to choose from; and imperial physicians guarded their health. Surely, then, emperors should have enjoyed long, happy lives and died peacefully in their old age. Yet the truth of history is astounding: of those 223 emperors, 98 met unnatural ends, an abnormal death rate of 44 percent, far higher than the rate of accidental death among ordinary people! This shocking figure not only reveals the cruelty and danger behind imperial power, but also serves as a warning to later generations.

Now, let us revisit this long-buried history and recount, one by one, the bizarre events surrounding the emperors’ unusual deaths. Join us as we step into these heart-pounding moments in history and uncover the truth about life and death behind imperial power.
