Studies in Early Modern and Modern Japanese Cultural History

[Synopsis]

This book covers the period from the mid-sixteenth century, when Japan first came into contact with Western culture, to the 1920s. It examines how various cultural elements from Western, Chinese, and Japanese cultures blended and clashed during the Edo period, giving rise to what we now call traditional Japanese culture, and explores the historical impact this tradition had on Japanese society from the Meiji era onward.
