A Complete History of Modern China (10 Volumes)

For the study of modern Chinese history, the 20th century was a century of beginnings, transition, innovation, and achievement. The study of modern Chinese history became an important branch of Chinese historiography in the 20th century. Over that century, China underwent a dramatic transformation from a semicolonial, semifeudal society to a socialist society. The study of modern Chinese history also changed profoundly. It separated from traditional Chinese historiography. In the 1930s and 1940s, scholarship with a bourgeois orientation, representing the interests of the ruling class and serving the semicolonial, semifeudal society, predominated. Research guided by Marxism emerged during the New Democratic Revolution. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Marxist research into modern Chinese history gradually became dominant.
