Slaughterhouse

"Garbage is everywhere in the food processing workshop, and sewage flows across the floor. Rotten pork and moldy sausages are treated with borax and glycerin, then a small amount of fresh meat is added, and then shoveled into the sausage blender along with the poisoned rats..." This kind of food production makes people sick just thinking about it. This is the real scene of the American food factory in the early 20th century described in "Slaughterhouse". It is said that President Roosevelt read this novel while eating breakfast in the White House one day. After reading that disgusting passage, the president screamed, jumped up, spat out the unfinished food in his mouth, and threw the remaining sausage on the plate out of the window. "Slaughterhouse" revealed the tip of the iceberg of food safety issues. It not only disgusted President Roosevelt, but also put the entire American society in a state of outrage. In 1906, driven by President Roosevelt, the Pure Food and Drug Act was passed, giving birth to the FDA (U. S. Food and Drug Administration), the patron saint of food safety in the United States.
