The Broken Scripture

A-Wang, a boy who lived in Wangfu Lane in Xincheng, never imagined that his adoptive father, Lu Xigen, a humble barrel maker, was actually a ruthless master of the Wood Scripture arts.

A gambling dispute between Lu Xigen and Wang Xizai, a butcher who lived in the same lane, over Wang Xizai’s son, Wang Renzhong (literally, “human seed”), set the Lu and Wang families against each other. In a fit of anger, A-Wang’s adoptive mother, Madam Lu Peng, hanged herself outside the Wang family’s home one night. After Wang Xizai discarded her body, villains found it and sold it for money.

Lu Xigen swallowed his anger. A-Wang ran away from home and met Zhao Daguang, a coffin maker, in a ruined temple one night. Thinking he had learned the art of revenge, he never expected that this would plunge him into an endless abyss.

Those who practice the Wood Scripture are destined to suffer the “Five Flaws and Three Deprivations.” A dispute over a single coin turned the lives of two boys, A-Wang and Wang Renzhong, upside down. Carpenters, butchers, coffin makers, illusionists, scholars, coroners… People who seem ordinary in everyday life turn out to be anything but.
