Lan Wangji, one of the Twin Jades of the Gusu Lan Clan, died wrongfully accused on a cold winter day, in the courtyard of the Gusu Lan ancestral hall, beneath the discipline whip of his uncle, Lan Qiren.
If Lan Wangji had only admitted to associating with demonic cultivators, with Wei Wuxian, the Yiling Patriarch, and confessed to mistakenly killing Lan Song, the Lan Clan’s elder and clan leader, his punishment could have been reduced. But Lan Wangji was unexpectedly obstinate about this. The clan leader Lan Song had been a demon lord from the Yin Moon Demon Realm. Yet no one could see through his disguise, because only Lan Wangji possessed the heavenly eye, which let him perceive the true nature of demons and evil beings.
This enraged Lan Qiren so much that he lost all reason. Ignoring Lan Xichen’s desperate efforts to protect Lan Wangji, he shoved Lan Xichen aside and delivered all thirty-three strikes of the discipline whip at once. Lan Xichen fainted from grief during the beating, while the other elders eventually could not bear to watch and turned away.
After the punishment, Lan Qiren regained his senses. When he realized what he had done and tried to lift Lan Wangji, he discovered that Lan Wangji’s bones and sinews were shattered, his internal organs crushed, his golden core destroyed, and his body a bloody mess. His hands trembling, Lan Qiren grasped Lan Wangji’s wrist. The moment he sensed Lan Wangji’s condition, it was as if lightning had struck him. Forgetting all decorum, he lifted Lan Wangji’s lifeless body and broke down sobbing.
A few days later, news that Lan Wangji had been executed by the Lan Clan for sheltering demonic cultivators spread throughout the cultivation world. As expected, it caused an uproar. No one had imagined that Hanguang-Jun, the model cultivator revered by all the clans, would meet such an end.
Lan Wangji’s soul finally broke free of his body and flew to the Burial Mounds, where he met Wei Ying.
The siege by the cultivation clans continued. They ground Wei Wuxian’s corpse to dust.
Lan Xichen of the Gusu Lan Clan cleaned Lan Wangji’s body, which looked almost alive, and sealed it safely in the ice within the Cold Pond Cave.
From then on, Lan Xichen never left the Cold Pond Cave again. He never set foot outside it.
To Lan Xichen now, the position of clan leader meant nothing. He had no interest in the Gusu Lan Clan’s century-old legacy.
What truly mattered was that his only sibling, his blood brother, had vanished, a life once so full of vitality, gone just like that.
He began to despise the Gusu Lan Clan’s coldheartedness and the numb inhumanity of its rules.
He gave himself over to ruin, defying those cold, heartless rules of the Gusu Lan Clan.
Lan Qiren, meanwhile, went white-haired overnight, aging terribly.
Lan Wangji was the son of his elder brother, his own nephew.
When the truth was made public, the Yin Moon Star Shining Demon Lord personally told Lan Qiren that he had planned everything himself, using Lan Qiren’s own hands to kill Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian.
