Robert Hutchins is a legendary figure in American education. He became the president of the University of Chicago at the age of 29 and served for 16 years. "The Learning Society" published in 1968 pioneered the study of the learning society and was the first classic book in this field. Hutchins pointed out that "the purpose of education is understanding, and anything beyond understanding is superfluous." Based on this view, he believes that education serves the growth of the economy, national wealth and national power indirectly rather than directly. Obviously, this view remains extremely challenging to this day. The publication of this book provides a different way of thinking about China's educational reform and the future development direction of Chinese education.
