New Emotions in the City: the Cultural Experience of Chinese Traveling to Japan in the Late Qing Dynasty and the Early Republic of China

Chinese people living in Japan during the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China experienced with their own eyes the tremendous transformation of Japanese urban society on the material level after the Meiji Restoration. We need to re-understand the significance of the cross-cultural exchange activity of "Japanese Travel" in the historical context of early globalization. At the same time, we can also regard intellectuals in Japan as ordinary "tourists" and describe their "real feelings" in daily life from a physical and emotional perspective. This book believes that "urban experience" forms the spatial imagination of Chinese people in Japan about the "world". In the literary writings of urban life by "tourists", we can find the "non-daily" aspects hidden under the surface of daily life. It is these non-daily cultural experiences that form the variation in their emotional structure.
