"Youth in the Flames of War" tells the story of a martyr's daughter who disguised herself as a man and participated in the heroic battle of the People's Liberation Army during the Revolutionary War. In 1947, in order to cooperate with the field army in combat, a local armed force fought bloody battles with the enemy for a day and a night, and all but the district team leader Gao Shan died. In order to avenge her sacrificed comrades and father, Gao Shan disguised herself as a man and joined the PLA field force, and was assigned to the Young Heroes Platoon as the deputy platoon leader. In a battle, Gao Shan was heroically wounded in order to save platoon leader Lei Zhenlin. His identity was exposed during the operation and he was transferred from the combat unit. The novel describes Gao Shan's work and life in a combat unit.
