Gu Congxi, a Vice Minister of the Secretariat, has his wife poisoned to death. Song Sizhi, an impoverished scholar working at Zhong'an Hall, becomes the prime suspect. After his arrest, Song Sizhi joins forces with Ye Yuanqi, a junior official at the Court of Judicial Review, to prove his innocence and solve the case, uncovering a series of conspiracies in the process. Song Sizhi and Gu Congxi are brought together by these events, and join hands to defeat their enemies.
