I'd heard of people favoring sons over daughters, and even seen it with my own eyes. But who has ever heard of someone favoring daughters over sons, to the point of wishing her son dead so she could leave her fortune to her daughter? My mother was just like that. And even so, as I lay in my hospital bed, all I got was, “Why didn't you die sooner?”
